1987: WHEN THE DAY COMES
In 1987 Korea, under an oppressive military regime, a college student gets killed during a police interrogation involving torture. Government officials are quick to cover up the death and order the body to be cremated. A prosecutor who is supposed to sign the cremation release, raises questions about a 21-year-old kid dying of a heart attack, and begins looking into the case for truth. Despite a systematic attempt to silence everyone involved in the case, the truth gets out, causing an eruption of public outrage.
In the gloomy ‘80s, Sang-ho is wanted by the authorities for his participation in a student protest. Parting with his colleagues, Sang-ho winds up in a town on the outskirts. Hiding on the second floor of a worn down wooden house and idling away his days, Sang-ho discovers a hole looking into the room below. Casually looking through the hole, Sang-ho sees Hee-ran. Like, Sang-ho she is also trapped in the room as her husband locks the door from outside. He watches her body, feels her presence, and takes her into his heart. One day, after Hee-ran’s husband left for work, Sang-ho finds the keys and enters Hee-ran’s room.
The year is 1900 and the Joseon royal government has just made the decision to levy high taxes all over the country. On Cheju, a poor, rocky volcanic island off the kingdom's southern border, rebellion is growing among the population. Soon after, YI Jea-soo ? a simple messenger at the time of the departure of the County Magistrate of the Dae Jung District, CHAE Gun-su ? is appointed commander-in-chief of the rebel forces. The fortified village of Cheju, a Christian stronghold, soon becomes a major objective in the conflict.
